Founded in 2023, MoldCo set out to tackle mold toxicity, a condition that often goes undiagnosed. Through its virtual clinic, the startup provides patients with easier access to testing for mold and other environmental toxins, along with diagnostic services and treatment options.
The company recently secured $8 million in seed financing, led jointly by Collaborative Fund and Cantos, to expand its laboratory testing and care programs. In total, MoldCo has brought in $11 million in funding so far.
The idea for MoldCo came from Ariana Thacker, a venture capitalist and former chemical engineer, who drew on her own health struggles for inspiration. In 2022, she began experiencing severe, unexplained symptoms that led her down the path to creating the company.
Thacker explained in an exclusive interview that within just six and a half months she went from being healthy, with no prior medical concerns and an active fitness routine, to experiencing severe symptoms including exhaustion, cognitive difficulties, major hair loss, noticeable weight gain, and shifts in mood.
An air quality test later revealed that Thacker’s Miami apartment contained elevated mold levels. Exposure to mold is known to cause a wide spectrum of health effects, from relatively mild allergic reactions to more serious, long-term conditions.
In search of answers, Thacker consulted multiple doctors. Alongside her primary care physician, she met with specialists across several fields – including neurology, immunology, and allergy care – to investigate the root of her worsening symptoms.
She recounted that she sought out functional medicine specialists and went through extensive testing, including blood panels and an MRI. Although her results appeared mostly normal – an unusual outcome given the severity of her symptoms – she found herself bouncing between different providers without clear answers.
A friend eventually suggested her health problems might be linked to mold exposure in her home. At first, she was skeptical that mold could cause such serious issues, but the idea prompted her to narrow her focus on possible treatment options and experts who could assist.
Thacker founded MoldCo in 2023 to provide virtual access to mold exposure testing and treatment options. She noted that the company’s care model is supported by top physicians and specialists in environmental health.
MoldCo’s virtual care system is designed to remove common barriers in accessing treatment for mold toxicity. Through the platform, patients can connect with certified specialists in mold-related illness without the long delays often tied to specialty visits. The service also offers advanced biomarker testing to evaluate immune response and inflammation indicators. After a confirmed diagnosis, patients may receive prescription-grade binders, customized peptides and compounded therapies, all delivered to their homes.
In addition, MoldCo assigns dedicated care navigators who help patients follow their treatment plan and provide ongoing support throughout the recovery process.
For most patients, MoldCo’s treatment plans are priced in the range of $150 to $300 per month. Laboratory testing is offered separately, with an entry-level panel available for $99 and an expanded option priced at $799 that evaluates 16 different biomarkers.
