Anterior and Stellarus Partner to Automate Prior Authorization Workflows

Clinician-led artificial intelligence platform Anterior and health technology company Stellarus have entered into a strategic partnership focused on automating prior authorization processes.

The collaboration is intended to support providers by automating tasks such as case research and policy application. According to the companies, reducing the workload associated with these activities will allow teams to focus on complex determinations. They also said providers will receive quicker first-time approvals, giving members faster access to care.

As part of the agreement, Anterior’s clinical AI technology will be integrated with Stellarus’s AtlasIQ platform. The companies said the combined solution is designed to help health plans deploy quicker prior authorization processes. Executives emphasized that all final determinations will continue to be made by licensed clinicians rather than AI tools.

Vanessa Colella, president and CEO of Stellarus, said the partnership brings together Stellarus’s healthcare technology platform, integration expertise and operational experience with Anterior’s clinical AI capabilities. According to Colella, Anterior’s technology automates research, documentation and policy application activities that support prior authorization.

Colella also said Anterior has been a leader in the clinical AI space and noted that the current opportunity is to help health plans deploy AI solutions in safe and reliable ways. She explained that Stellarus was built inside a health plan and therefore understands the operational, clinical, and regulatory realities that customers navigate. Colella said this experience helps the company assist organizations in adopting new technologies, integrating them into existing systems and workflows, and delivering measurable value without disrupting the way care is managed.

Anterior CEO Abdel Mahmoud, M.D., said many health plans want to use AI and transform their operations but often do not know how to begin despite having access to data. “Every plan wants to use AI; it wants to transform,” said Mahmoud. “It knows [it] has the data, but doesn’t know where to begin.”

Mahmoud said the partnership is intended to address that challenge. He noted that the two companies share a common vision and encounter similar issues involving healthcare data and interoperability. At the same time, he said they also see opportunities to address inefficiencies using current technology.

According to Mahmoud, prior authorization represents the most obvious area for automation. He added that once prior authorization processes are structured, there are additional opportunities to build on that work. Mahmoud said organizations could pull more proactive care forward after establishing that foundation.

Stellarus was spun out of Blue Shield of California earlier this year. The company provides technology infrastructure and digital capabilities for nonprofit, community and regional health plans.

Mahmoud also discussed concerns surrounding artificial intelligence in healthcare. He said skepticism about AI comes from a good place and described Stellarus as representing good, proper use of the technology. He added that the partnership sends a signal to the market that the companies are taking the issue seriously.

In the future, executives said the collaboration is expected to expand into care planning, policy optimization and broader utilization management.
