OpenAI has officially released its Health in ChatGPT feature to all users in the United States, enabling users to link the AI chatbot straight to their medical records and health data from wearable health devices.

This functionality, which was first reported in January, will make ChatGPT a more personalized health companion, with the ability to bring together data from patient portals, Apple Health, and the leading EHR platforms such as Epic and Oracle Health. Health-related questions accounted for more than 300 million users a week on the platform, leading OpenAI to believe it could benefit users by organizing disorganized medical information, summarizing visit notes, and facilitating a more efficient experience when visiting a doctor.

The system’s executives stress that the system is not to diagnose conditions or even to supplant qualified medical professionals, but rather will provide a readily accessible reference in a healthcare environment where timely care is hard to come by.

OpenAI collaborates with hundreds of physician advisors worldwide from 60 countries to ensure accuracy and safety. These healthcare professionals create intricate, authentic test scenarios and stringent criteria to assess the AI’s performance in terms of communication, safety, contextual understanding, and proper care escalation. The experience makes use of new AI models, such as GPT-5.5 Instant for free users and GPT-5.6 Sol for premium subscribers, with both models demonstrating significant enhancements on health metrics.

OpenAI claims these new models accurately suggest emergency treatment in 99 percent of the cases when it is needed, and prevent unneeded escalation to the emergency room. Feedback from early trial users on making it easy to navigate to a separate health area led to OpenAI embedding the feature into the main chat, making it possible to tap into their connected health history during natural interactions seamlessly.

User choice and data security are at the heart of the implementation, with multiple layers of security measures in place to safeguard user privacy and protect the data both in transit and at rest. Medical information and health dialogue, whether accessed or set to be accessed through a user’s typical account settings, are still not included in the categories that are allowed to be used to train OpenAI’s foundation models or to target ads. The user always has control over what information is connected, can explicitly give or deny permission for the AI to use context, and can at any time disconnect and prevent the system from using their information.

The growth follows ongoing industry debate and litigation, including a recent case alleging that the delayed care was the result of “dangerous advice.” Given these concerns, OpenAI leadership believes that the use of chatbots should not be the sole indicator of medical decisions, but rather a critical tool in helping to make health information more accessible and easier to understand for millions of individuals throughout their care journeys.

OpenAI has expanded its consumer health initiatives by making Health in ChatGPT more widely accessible, giving millions of users an easier way to explore trusted health information through conversational AI. The initiative reflects OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to improving access to reliable health guidance while encouraging users to consult qualified healthcare professionals for diagnosis and treatment. By combining advanced AI with high-quality health information, OpenAI aims to make healthcare knowledge more understandable and accessible.

Bringing Health Information to More Users

The expanded availability of Health in ChatGPT allows OpenAI to deliver health-related information to a broader audience. Users can ask questions about symptoms, wellness, medications, nutrition, and preventive care using natural language, making it easier to understand complex medical topics.

The wider availability of Health in ChatGPT marks an important milestone in OpenAI’s efforts to expand consumer health services. By making reliable health information more accessible through conversational AI, OpenAI is helping individuals better understand their health while supporting informed conversations with healthcare professionals. As digital health continues to advance, AI-powered tools are expected to play an increasingly important role in health education and patient engagement.

The expansion demonstrates how OpenAI is contributing to the broader digital health landscape. AI-powered tools can improve patient engagement, enhance health education, and support healthcare organizations seeking innovative ways to communicate with patients.

Future Opportunities

As AI continues to evolve, OpenAI is expected to enhance Health in ChatGPT with improved reasoning, broader medical knowledge, and stronger integrations with digital health technologies. These advancements may further improve access to trustworthy health information while maintaining a focus on safety and transparency.
