- M7 Health Gets $10M to Boost H ...
In 2022, registered nurse Ilana Borkenstein, after facing constant challenges related to nurse scheduling, founded M7 Health with her Harvard schoolmate Eric Gruskin. The primary aim of the firm was to improve nurse workforce management using a robust health platform that addresses both staff needs and hospital operational constraints.
Borkenstein, by means of her direct frontline training, saw how dysfunctional processes and inflexible staffing models impeded nurses’ ability to perform effectively. During COVID, hospitals nationwide grappled with managing and retaining their personnel. A modern health platform could streamline these complexities, she believed.
She remarked that even in a specialized unit like M7, where they were successfully treating and curing cancer, it was puzzling to her that challenges related to workforce management, staff allocation, and scheduling remained unresolved. Such gaps underscored the need for a comprehensive health platform built with nurse input.
The company secured $10 million in Series A investment, spearheaded by Threshold Ventures, to expand its health platform to more healthcare providers. 25m Health, Investors First Round Capital and Lakehouse also contributed to the round. M7 Health has secured a total of $17 million so far. m7health.com+1
The business will use the funds to enhance its AI scheduling skills and enhance its teams in technology, product development, and operations. The improved health platform will offer smarter features to optimize schedules, reduce overtime, and improve retention. m7health.com+1
Borkenstein, Gruskin, and their colleagues developed M7 as a comprehensive health platform to facilitate nurse time management, staffing, and communication in a smooth and equitable manner. The objective is to synchronize the requirements of nurses with the operational reality of hospitals, facilitating teams in the creation of transparent and individualized schedules while significantly reducing administrative burdens. Borkenstein explained that their approach assists nurse leaders in gathering staff preferences regarding scheduling, then consolidates that input to generate an initial version of a fair schedule. She added that their process is highly data-driven, measuring the percentage of staff preferences accommodated and verifying that each unit is staffed with the appropriate mix of skills and experience levels. This is central to what makes the health platform effective. Fierce Healthcare+1
The platform furthermore gives a “house view,” which offers a comprehensive staffing overview, enabling nursing directors and hospital managers to have an overall perspective of staffing across specific units within a hospital or many hospitals, she said. Fierce Healthcare+1
Borkenstein also observed that the use of superior workforce tools may enhance work experiences, hence fostering a more sustainable staff and improving patient outcomes. The engagement statistics backed this up: over 60 hospitals use the health platform, with 13,000 healthcare workers onboarded, and staff engagement above 90%. M7 has agreements to double its presence before the end of the year. m7health.com+1
Additional Insights & What Comes Next for the Health Platform
With this raise, M7 Health is poised to refine its health platform further. Upcoming enhancements likely include predictive staffing tools, better real-time dashboards, and more flexible scheduling options that allow more choices for nurse shift lengths and preferences.
Healthcare systems integrating this health platform may also see operational savings from reduced reliance on contract nursing labor and overtime. Early reports show decreases in overtime and administrative scheduling time. m7health.com+1
On the nurse side, the shift toward using a user-friendly health platform could reduce burnout, improve morale, and help with retention. When nurses feel heard through scheduling preferences and fair shift distribution, engagement tends to rise.
Overall, M7 Health’s growth with its health platform marks not just a technology milestone but a cultural one in healthcare—where operational tools are built hand-in-hand with frontline staff, and sustainability becomes a priority.
