- Nourish Expands Rollout of AI ...
Nourish has redesigned its patient application around a 24/7 artificial intelligence-powered Health Assistant, a tool the company says is generating strong patient engagement and supporting patients between appointments.
The Health Assistant, which was previously available in beta and is now being rolled out more broadly, provides personalized support to patients outside of scheduled visits. Its functions include meal planning, laboratory result explanations, appointment preparation, prescription management, insurance-related assistance, scheduling support and responses to general patient questions. The system can also direct users to human support when necessary.
According to Nourish, the AI tool is built using information from a patient’s medical records, laboratory results, health goals and the company’s clinical protocols. The assistant has also been trained on millions of historical data points.
Patient Engagement Data Reported During Broader Deployment
Nourish reported that half of its active patients interact with the Health Assistant on a daily basis. The company also said patients using the tool are completing more goals established with their registered dietitians.
Additional engagement measures have also increased. Patients are scheduling laboratory tests at twice the previous rate, while those who receive medical care from physicians through Nourish are enrolling in those visits two to three times more frequently than before. At the same time, the company noted that the number of dietitian visits has not increased. Users are also recording meals 15% more often each day.
Aidan Dewar, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nourish, said the company’s decision to redesign the patient experience was influenced by the performance of AI-driven features already in use.
“We were seeing patients using a lot of the disparate features … and those were driving a lot of engagement and outcomes, but the AI was driving the best clinical outcomes,” Dewar said.
Examples of How Patients Use the Health Assistant
The company provided several examples of how the assistant can be used. A person with prediabetes can log a meal and receive feedback regarding the meal and its macronutrients. The system can then suggest lunch options and recipes based on that individual’s diet plan and health goals.
Patients can also ask for plain-language summaries of laboratory results, receive support preparing for upcoming appointments, and obtain recommendations on subjects to discuss with healthcare providers. Those recommendations can then be sent to a dietitian before a visit.
Nourish said the tool also gives dietitians additional insight into patient habits and concerns.
Weight Management Results and Provider-Focused AI Tools
The company reported a 15% increase in patient weight loss after 30 days among individuals with access to the chatbot. After 60 days, weight loss was reported to be 30% higher. Nourish also observed a 20% increase in weight tracking activity.
According to Nourish, these changes are linked to the tool’s ability to encourage behavior change through timely prompts tailored to a patient’s care plan. The company said patients log information more consistently and complete more goals, with small daily actions contributing to larger differences in weight-loss progress over time.
Alongside the patient-facing assistant, Nourish also provides an AI copilot for dietitians. The system summarizes developments that occur between sessions, including chatbot interactions and journaling information. A clinical decision-support feature called “Assist” suggests discussion topics for clinicians and is used in about half of patient sessions. The platform also provides guidance to help clinicians recognize progress, assess consistency and address challenges.
Dewar said he believes healthcare is moving toward AI-augmented care led by humans. He also said that as Nourish scales and gathers more data, the company is seeing its large language models improve rapidly.
Nourish is expanding the rollout of its AI Health Assistant after beta testing showed strong patient engagement. The new experience is designed to provide patients with personalized support between appointments while keeping Nourish clinicians at the center of care.
Nourish Introduces 24/7 AI Health Support
Nourish has redesigned its patient app around an always-on AI Health Assistant that can provide support around the clock. The assistant can help patients with meal planning, lab-result insights, appointment preparation, scheduling, prescription questions, and insurance-related support.
Nourish says the assistant is designed to extend care beyond scheduled appointments and help patients stay engaged with their nutrition and health goals.
