Siemens Varian

Siemens Varian receives the green light in the US and the EU for a tool to image tumors the Varian Medical Systems division of Siemens Healthineers has developed a new tool that enables medical professionals to take instant photos of tumors, calculate changes in the tumor, and surrounding organs, and then utilize information to modify a patient’s therapy over time.

The company reported that two Varian radiation treatment systems set with imaging tools had received a green signal from both FDA and CE, making the HyperSight technology soon accessible to healthcare practitioners in the U.S. and Europe. The Halcyon and Ethos image-guided radiation devices from Varian are the approved systems. According to Varian’s release, the latter was used in the first formal HyperSight-equipped operation at Penn Medicine.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology from HyperSight operates as radiation treatment and is administered using Ethos or Halcyon equipment. According to Varian, HyperSight produces high-resolution pictures in as little as six seconds, whereas conventional CBCT scanners can take up to 60 seconds and require certain cancer patients to continually hold their breath in order to acquire a stable image throughout that period.

In addition to producing faster scans than its competitors who are using traditional linear accelerator-based scanners, its technology also creates bigger and more contrasted pictures. The final pictures are used to identify a tumor’s exact location and direct daily radiation treatments.

This could also help doctors in modifying therapy as necessary. With the help of HyperSight, doctors can map out radiation dose distribution, which traditionally required a separate CT scan to calculate and adjust the course of treatment as necessary. The scans also include quantitative data demonstrating how radiotherapy alters the tumor and surrounding anatomy.

The President of Varian’s Radiation Oncology credited Siemens’ recent purchase of the company with enhancing its capacity to produce innovative technology goods like HyperSight.

The President further stated:

“Becoming a Siemens Healthineers company has given us an opportunity to sharpen and accelerate these efforts, with a focus on connecting the power of imaging inside and outside the treatment room.”

The $16 billion takeover took place In April 2021. Varian contributed 1.3 billion euros to Siemens’ earnings in just its first six months under the Siemens brand, helping the Medtech company achieve record sales for the fiscal year.

After a year, Varian increased its parent company’s 2022 annual revenue by 3.1 billion euros, breaking the previous year’s record as well. But things have somewhat changed in the fiscal year 2023. Varian’s first half year and a half on Siemens’ property saw constant growth, but as per the first-quarter financial report the subsidiary’s comparable revenue dropped by 4.5%.

Siemens gave reasoning for the declining sales trend which was the delays at the end of the supply chain.

Siemens Healthineers will present and illustrate its most recent, ground-breaking advancements in healthcare both physically and electronically at the Arab Health, the most significant healthcare trade fair in the Middle East.
